Aluclad windows: pros and cons

Alu-clad windows give you real timber inside and powder-coated aluminium outside, so there is no outside painting and triple glazing reaches Uw 0.78 W/m²K. The downsides are price (about 10% to 30% more than painted timber, and €1,000 to €1,500 per m² against €650 to €950 for triple-glazed uPVC), a 6 to 9 week lead time, and an outside finish you can't touch up yourself.

What are the advantages of alu-clad windows?

Warm timber inside, no painting outside, and some of the lowest U-values you can buy.

  • Real wood inside. Painted or lacquered Nordic pine, or oak. Warm to the touch, and you can repaint it any colour years later.
  • No outside painting. The powder-coated aluminium cover takes the rain and sun. Wash it down once or twice a year.
  • Low heat loss. Triple-glazed alu-clad reaches Uw 0.78 to 0.85 W/m²K, well inside the 1.4 W/m²K SEAI asks of grant-aided windows.
  • Long life. Around 40 years with the seals and opening gear looked after. The powder coat stays in excellent condition for about 25 years.
  • Two colours at no extra cost on most systems. Anthracite or black outside, white or bare wood inside.

What are the disadvantages of alu-clad windows?

Mainly the price, then the wait and the weight.

DownsideWhat it means for you
PriceAbout 10% to 30% more than painted timber. €1,000 to €1,500 per m² installed against €900 to €1,400 for aluminium and €650 to €950 for triple-glazed uPVC. A 3-bed semi costs €11,000 to €20,000
Lead time6 to 9 weeks from a signed window schedule or survey to fitting, because every window is made to order
Outside finishPowder coat can't be touched up like paint. A deep scratch or a fade needs a specialist to recoat it
WeightTriple-glazed units weigh 30 to 45 kg per m² of glass, so big fixed panes need lifting gear and a strong opening
Upkeep is low, not zeroSeals and opening gear may need replacing over the years, and hinges like a squirt of oil

Common problems with alu-clad windows, and how to avoid them

  • uPVC sold as alu-clad. Some frames sold as alu-clad are uPVC or foam with an aluminium cap. Ask what the core of the frame is made of. Real alu-clad is laminated timber.
  • Powder coat breaking down near the sea. Within 5 km of the coast, ask for Qualicoat Seaside pre-treatment on the aluminium. It adds about 5% to 8%.
  • Draughts round a good window. Foam alone is not airtight. Ask for airtightness tape inside and expanding tape outside on every frame.
  • Wrong glass on big south-facing panes. Large south or west screens can overheat a room. Ask about lower solar-gain glass on those openings.

Are alu-clad windows worth it?

Yes, if you want timber inside and never want to paint the outside, and the budget runs to it. On a self-build or a full-house upgrade, the 10% to 30% over timber is the price of not repainting for decades. If the budget is tight and you're happy with a plastic frame, triple-glazed uPVC gets close on heat loss for less. See alu-clad vs aluminium vs uPVC and alu-clad vs timber.

Questions homeowners & self-builders ask

Are aluclad windows worth the money?

Yes, if you want real timber inside and no outside painting. They cost about 10% to 30% more than painted timber and €1,000 to €1,500 per m² against €650 to €950 for triple-glazed uPVC, and last around 40 years with the seals and gear looked after.

What are the problems with aluclad windows?

The common ones are uPVC frames sold as alu-clad, powder coat breaking down near the sea without a marine pre-treatment, draughts from frames fitted with foam only, and overheating behind large south-facing panes. Each is avoided at the ordering stage.

Do aluclad windows need maintenance?

Very little. Wash the aluminium once or twice a year, oil the hinges, and expect to replace seals or opening gear at some point. The inside timber can be repainted whenever you like.

How long does it take to get aluclad windows?

Allow 6 to 9 weeks from a signed window schedule or site survey to delivery and fitting, because each window is made to order.
