Why lift-and-slide beats old inline rollers in Irish wind
On an ordinary inline sliding door, the heavy glass sash permanently rests on brush seals, creating friction when you push it and letting gales whistle through the brushes. On an alu-clad lift-and-slide door:
- Turn the 180° lever handle down: Internal cam gears physically lift the 200kg–300kg triple-glazed sash 8mm upwards off its twin rubber weather gaskets onto stainless ball-bearing bogies so it glides effortlessly along the track.
- Turn the handle back up at any position: The entire weight of the sash drops straight down onto continuous twin EPDM compression seals around all four sides, locking it hermetically against driving Atlantic rain and howling wind.
- Night-ventilation micro-lock: You can drop the sash onto its security pins with a 10mm baffled ventilation gap while keeping the door locked from the outside.
If you prefer the entire opening to fold 90% clear onto a sheltered patio rather than sliding behind a fixed pane, compare our dedicated guide at bifoldingdoors.ie.

Questions homeowners & self-builders ask
Can an alu-clad lift-and-slide door have a flush floor threshold?
Yes. Modern alu-clad lift-and-slide systems use a thermally broken glass-fibre reinforced composite and anodised aluminium threshold that recesses into the floor screed, leaving only a 15mm–20mm weather rail above the finished kitchen tile.
What is the maximum width for a 2-pane alu-clad lift-and-slide door?
With heavy-duty 300kg or 400kg lift-and-slide hardware, a 2-pane alu-clad slider (one sliding sash, one fixed pane) can span up to 4.4m to 4.8m wide (each pane up to 2.3m wide) by 2.5m high.
